Business premises getting a new business, month by month
In October 2026, 2,762 of the business premises we follow in Great Britain got a new registered business: 2,324 taken on where none was registered and 438 changing hands from one business to another. That's 5.7 for every 1,000 premises we follow. Cafés and restaurants made up the most, 1,105, then food shops, 705.
Published on the first working day of every month: how many business premises got a new registered business, taken on or changing hands, by nation and region each month and by council and constituency over three months, with a rate per 1,000 premises and downloadable tables. Each month is provisional when first published and revised once, the month after. It sits beside the Formation Index, which counts new companies, and the Business Survival Index, which follows them.
